Leverage.
Today’s topic is Leverage.
In this episode, I shared four scenarios—three from other people and one from my personal experience—where leverage was used to achieve something remarkable.
Here are the four things discussed in this episode:
• I shared a perspective from a Nollywood movie I watched 14 years ago, where a man who had just lost his father was asked to choose between his dad’s two businesses—the legal corporate business and the illegal drug business. He chose the illegal business because that’s where his leverage lay. He said he loved to play dirty and get involved in enterprises or engagements with high risk.
• A veteran Nigerian broadcaster, Daddy Freeze, said he had always been talkative right from his high school days. He talked a lot, and his classmates found him interesting and fascinating. He said he was always on the list of noisemakers in class, and his teachers used to shame, mock, and spank him for talking too much. Many years later, he met one of those teachers, and the teacher asked him what he did for a living. He replied by saying, “I talk for a living.” This is a practical example of someone who understands the power of leverage by venturing into broadcasting because he knew he could talk. And talking is the primary skill required to become a broadcaster. The rest is secondary.
• Another veteran Nigerian broadcaster, Frank Edoho, talked about another skill he possesses aside from communication, which is photography. He is a badass photographer who helped his ex-wife build her interior decorating business. He said this during a virtual class I attended where he was teaching us about communication. He mentioned that if he ever relocated to somewhere like the United States of America, he would use his photography skill to help real estate companies get the best snapshots of their properties. Boom! That's his fucking leverage to earn as a fresh migrant in the United States of America.
• Lastly, I shared my own leverage. What’s my leverage? My leverage is being able to talk too. My oratory ability. Being able to play with my imagination as a creative. My vested interest in studying human psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion, et al, to have a holistic view of society and, in turn, use it to expand my vision, purpose, and business—The High Agency Architecture.
